👋 Hey! This is my "Gear" of 2025. Will try to continue my setup series annually to sort of document my journey through the years.
As you can see, I have opted for a more minimalist desk setup...
I did enjoy rocking my dual 27" monitor setup with a high refresh rate (especially for gaming 🤓). However, I eventually realised that it was actually making me more distractred rather than productive. I ditched the second monitor because it was a magnet for Slack and Outlook.
The Mackbook screen is perfectly fine on its own but I still wanted an external screen because I work with UIs a lot. I actually felt inspired to try this portable monitor setup after reading a blog post from my old friend Xavier (read it here), who is a big fan of minimalism and a SWE too.
Luckily, I became a dad in 2025, so I had an option to switch my setup because we were moving to a new flat.
Another problem with my old setup was that I had too many things, which is annoying when you need to pack, etc. Thus, I sold most of the things I had from my old setup before the move and just bought a 16" 4k OLED portable monitor, which is a game changer.
👇 Meme below is basically a "before and after" pic of my 2024 vs 2025 setups:

Now I only need a tiny desk, can fit it all into my backpack, and work efficiently from anywhere. Actually, I see more now with smaller screens because of the Mackbook monitor aspect ratio and my 4k vs 1080p external monitor differences lol. #lessismore
